Learn what Alex likes in Stardew Valley: loved gifts, liked gifts, dislikes, schedule, romance steps, and heart events.
What Does Alex Like in Stardew Valley
Alex loves exactly three things: Complete Breakfast, Salmon Dinner and the book Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick. That is the shortest loved list of any marriage candidate, and none of the three is available in your first year. His birthday is Summer 13.
This is why Alex reads as both the easiest and the hardest villager to gift. He likes almost everything else in the game, so nothing you hand him feels wrong, but the +80 tier is effectively locked until Year 2. The good news is that you do not need it. Everything below is accurate for Stardew Valley 1.6.
Alex at a Glance
| Birthday | Summer 13 (8x gift bonus that day) |
| Lives | 1 River Road, Pelican Town, with his grandparents |
| Job | Runs the Ice Cream Stand in Summer. Wants to go pro at gridball |
| Family | George and Evelyn, his grandparents. Dusty is the dog |
| Marriage candidate | Yes |
| Best budget gift | Any Egg from your coop. Liked, free, renewable daily |
| Best realistic loved gift | Salmon Dinner, the only loved gift you can actually farm |
Alex's Loved Gifts
Loved gifts give +80 friendship, or +640 on his birthday. Alex has only three of his own.
| Gift | How to Get |
|---|---|
| Complete Breakfast | Cook: Fried Egg + Milk + Hashbrowns + Pancakes. Recipe from The Queen of Sauce, Spring 21 Year 2 |
| Salmon Dinner | Cook: Salmon + Amaranth + Kale. Recipe mailed by Gus at 3 hearts |
| Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick | Random from Artifact Spots, or 20,000g from the Bookseller in Year 3 |
He also loves every Universal Love: Golden Pumpkin, Magic Rock Candy, Pearl, Prismatic Shard, Rabbit's Foot and Stardrop Tea.
Notice what is missing: anything you can get in Spring of Year 1. The Complete Breakfast recipe does not air until Spring 21 of Year 2. Salmon Dinner needs a Fall fish and a Spring crop in the same dish. The book is a 20,000g luxury or a lottery ticket from Artifact Spots. Compare that with Leah, who has a loved gift you can buy for 220g on day one, and the difference in difficulty is stark.
Why It Feels Like Alex Likes Everything
Alex takes all Universal Likes with no carve-outs, which is unusual. That single line covers every gem, every flower except Poppy, every vegetable, every artisan good except Oil and Void Mayonnaise, and nearly every cooked dish in the game. On top of that he likes all eggs. So almost anything in your bag reads back "this is one of my favourites" at +45.
That is the trap. +45 is not +80, but the gap matters far less than players assume. Here is what a normal week is actually worth:
| Action | Friendship per week |
|---|---|
| Talking to him once a day, 7 days | +140 |
| Two liked gifts (eggs, gems, flowers) | +90, plus +10 for using both slots |
| Two loved gifts | +160, plus +10 for using both slots |
One heart is 250 points. Talking to Alex every day is worth more than two loved gifts, and costs nothing. Daily conversation plus two eggs is +240 a week, which carries you from zero to the 8-heart dating cap in roughly two seasons without cooking a thing.
Alex's Liked Gifts
Liked gifts give +45 friendship. Alex's own additions to the universal list are all eggs.
| Gift | How to Get |
|---|---|
| All Eggs (except Void Egg) | Your coop, any size, any quality. The single best routine gift for Alex |
| Dinosaur Egg | Artifact Spots in the Mountain, fishing treasure, or a Dinosaur in a coop |
| Parrot Egg, Field Snack | Ginger Island, and cooking Acorn + Maple Seed + Pine Cone |
| All Gems | The Mines and Geodes. Amethyst, Topaz, Ruby, Emerald, Jade, Diamond |
| All Foraged Minerals (except Quartz) | The Mines. Earth Crystal, Frozen Tear, Fire Quartz |
| All Vegetables | Your crops. Parsnips, Cauliflower, Melon, anything |
| All Flowers (except Poppy) | Tulip, Blue Jazz, Summer Spangle, Fairy Rose, Sunflower |
| All Fruit Tree Fruit | Apple, Apricot, Cherry, Orange, Peach, Pomegranate, Banana, Mango |
| All Artisan Goods (except Oil and Void Mayonnaise) | Wine, Cheese, Mayonnaise, Jelly, Pickles, Cloth, Truffle Oil |
| Nearly all Cooked Dishes | Anything you cook, except Bread, Fried Egg, Strange Bun and Seafoam Pudding |
The Neutral Gifts That Look Like Wins
Neutral gifts give +20 and burn a weekly gift slot, so they are the quiet waste. Alex's neutral list contains several items players assume are likes:
- All Milk. Cow or goat, any quality. Milk is a like for Leah and Penny, but not for Alex.
- All Fruit that does not come from a tree. Blueberry, Melon, Starfruit and even Ancient Fruit are +20. Fruit tree fruit is +45. The distinction is easy to miss.
- All Mushrooms and most forage. Common Mushroom, Morel, Chanterelle, Purple Mushroom, Magma Cap, Daffodil, Dandelion, Leek, Hazelnut, Snow Yam, Winter Root, Ginger.
- Bread and Fried Egg. The two cooked dishes that fall out of the universal cooking like.
If you are already walking past Daffodils on the way to town, hand him a gem or an egg instead. Same effort, more than double the points.
Disliked and Hated Gifts
Disliked (-20 friendship): all Universal Dislikes, which covers fish, geodes, geode minerals, artifacts, seeds, building materials, fertiliser, bombs, sprinklers and tackle. On top of that: every Book except Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick, plus Salmonberry and Wild Horseradish.
Hated (-40 friendship): all Universal Hates, plus Holly and Quartz.
Quartz is the trap. Alex likes every gem and every other foraged mineral, so emptying your mining bag into his hands works fine until the one white crystal at the bottom costs you 40 points. Quartz is the most common mineral in the early Mines and it is the only one he hates.
Salmonberry is the second trap. During Salmonberry Season in Spring your inventory fills with free berries and the instinct is to hand them out. For Alex that is -20, even though the rest of his fruit list is merely neutral.
Do not give Alex a book. It reads like a thoughtful gift given his 5-heart event, but every book in the game is a dislike for him except the one he loves.
The Best Gift for Alex
- Year 1, all of it: Eggs. One coop produces more than you can gift, they never expire, and they are +45. This is what most players end up doing, and it is correct.
- Year 1, before a coop: Gems from the Mines. Amethyst appears from floor 1 and is worth the same +45 as a Diamond.
- Year 1, free above ground: Any flower except Poppy, or any vegetable you harvest.
- Year 2 onwards, the real loved gift: Salmon Dinner. See the planning section below.
- Birthday only: a Universal Love if you have one. A Rabbit's Foot on Summer 13 is +640.
Salmon Dinner: The Only Loved Gift Worth Planning For
Salmon Dinner needs Salmon + Amaranth + Kale, and the reason it frustrates people is that the three ingredients do not share a season.
- Kale is a Spring crop, 6 days to grow, seeds from Pierre's.
- Amaranth is a Fall crop, seeds from Pierre's.
- Salmon is a Fall river fish, 6am to 7pm, in Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest. The waterfalls in southern Cindersap Forest, by Pam's trailer, have it at any hour.
So the dish is only cookable in Fall, and only if you thought about it in Spring. The practical routine:
- Spring: plant a row of Kale and put the harvest in a chest. Crops do not spoil.
- Get Gus to 3 hearts so he mails you the recipe. Buy a drink at the Saloon and talk to him.
- Fall: plant Amaranth, and fish the river until you have a stack of Salmon.
- Cook a batch at once and store it. A cooked dish keeps forever, so one Fall session covers a full year of loved gifts, including Summer 13.
With Magic Bait you can catch Salmon in any season and skip the stockpiling entirely, but that is a Ginger Island unlock and long past the point where you needed the help.
Complete Breakfast is the alternative once the recipe airs on Spring 21 of Year 2, but it costs four sub-items per dish, two of which are themselves cooked. It is not worth building a pipeline for. If you want one without cooking, it appears in the Saloon's rotating stock, randomly in Krobus' shop on Saturdays, and out of Mystery Boxes. There is also a small joke in the game files: the Statue of Endless Fortune produces one Complete Breakfast per year, on Summer 13, Alex's birthday.
Alex's Birthday: Summer 13
Gifts on a villager's birthday are worth 8x their normal value. For Alex that makes Summer 13 the best gifting day of the year, and unlike most candidates his birthday is easy to plan around.
- A loved gift on Summer 13 is +640, which is over two and a half hearts.
- Even a plain egg that day is +360, nearly a heart and a half for free.
- He is at the beach in the morning and the Ice Cream Stand from noon, so he is trivial to find.
Because his loved gifts are so awkward, the birthday egg is genuinely the right play for most Year 1 saves. Do not skip the day waiting for a Salmon Dinner you cannot cook yet.
Where to Find Alex (Schedule Overview)
Alex lives at 1 River Road with George and Evelyn, on the east side of Pelican Town. He rarely goes far.
Spring and Fall: Outside his house under the tree from 8am, back in his room lifting weights at 1pm, by Dusty's dog pen from 4pm, then indoors from 6:30pm until bed at 10pm.
Summer: Leaves for the beach at 7:50am, then works the Ice Cream Stand from noon to 5pm, then home. This is the easiest season to catch him.
Winter: At the Spa from 9am to 3pm, every day. Also very easy.
Rainy days: He never leaves the house. Entryway in the morning, weights in his room at 1pm, dog pen at 4pm.
Wednesdays: At Haley and Emily's house from noon to 4:30pm, unless you already have 6+ hearts with him or with Haley.
Fastest way to find him: the Ice Cream Stand in Summer, or the Spa in Winter. Both are multi-hour fixed positions. In Spring and Fall, catch him under the tree outside his house between 8am and 1pm.
Alex's Heart Events and the Right Dialogue Choices
Alex's events walk back the arrogance he opens with, and only one of them has a choice that costs you friendship.
- 2 hearts: At the beach on a sunny Summer day while he is there. He throws a gridball at you. Both answers are friendship-neutral, so pick whichever fits your farmer.
- 4 hearts: Enter Pelican Town between 9am and 4pm. He is talking to Dusty by the dog pen and you overhear his father's abuse and his mother's death. Both answers are neutral.
- 5 hearts: Enter his house while he is in his room. This is the one that matters. Choose "We all have our strengths and weaknesses" for +50 friendship. "Worthless? Yeah, that about sums it up" costs -50. "That's crazy, you're a genius!" is neutral.
- 6 hearts: Enter his house while he is in his room. He apologises for being arrogant. No dialogue choices.
- 8 hearts: At the beach on a sunny day while he is there. The anniversary of his mother's death, and the music box. All four answers are friendship-neutral. Note the gate: he only goes to the beach in Summer, so reaching 8 hearts in Winter means waiting.
- 10 hearts: He mails you an invitation. Enter the Saloon between 7pm and 10pm for the private dinner and his confession. Both answers are friendship-neutral, but one of them turns him down.
- 14 hearts (post-marriage): Leave the farmhouse in Year 2+ between 6am and 8:20am on a non-Sunday, carrying 5,000g. He asks for the money for a secret project. Enter the Saloon the following Sunday to see the gridball room he built in the back with Gus, George, Kent and Shane.
That 5,000g is not optional if you want the event. Keep the cash on hand rather than in the shipping bin, or the trigger will not fire when you step outside.
Dating and Marrying Alex
- Reach 8 hearts. This is a hard cap until you give a Bouquet, so extra gifts past it are wasted.
- Buy a Bouquet from Pierre's General Store (250g) and give it to him to start dating.
- Reach 10 hearts, then give him a Mermaid's Pendant (5,000g from the Old Mariner, who appears on rainy days at the beach once you have upgraded your house at least once).
Once married, Alex moves in, adds a room to the right of your bedroom, and sets up a weights area outside behind the farmhouse. He visits his grandparents every Monday from 8:30am. On rainy nights he may cook you a Survival Burger, Dish O' The Sea, Fried Eel, Crispy Bass or Baked Fish, and on days he stays in he may make an Omelet, Hashbrowns or Pancakes.
One warning: married villagers decay at -20 friendship per day if you ignore them, and unlike the pre-marriage decay it never stops. Talk to him each morning.
How to Raise Friendship Fast
- Talk to him every single day. +20 a day is +140 a week, more than two loved gifts, and it also stops the -2 daily decay. This is the whole strategy for Alex.
- Build a coop early. Eggs are +45, renewable daily, and cost nothing you were not already collecting.
- Use both gift slots every week. Two gifts in one Sunday-to-Saturday week adds a +10 bonus on Sunday morning on top of the gifts themselves.
- Bank a Universal Love for Summer 13. A Rabbit's Foot or a Pearl on his birthday is +640 in one action.
- Plant Kale in Spring. It is the only step of the Salmon Dinner chain that has a deadline. Ten seconds of planning in Spring unlocks his loved gift in Fall.
- Sort your mining bag before you visit. Every gem and mineral is +45 except Quartz, which is -40. Drop the Quartz.
- Use the Help Wanted board. A request from Alex outside Pierre's grants 150 friendship plus 3x the item's value, more than any single gift.
- Stop at 8 hearts until you have a Bouquet. Friendship is capped there for marriage candidates, so points above it are thrown away.

The main things to remember about Alex:
What does Alex like the most in Stardew Valley?
He loves only three gifts, all worth +80: Complete Breakfast, Salmon Dinner and the book Jack Be Nimble, Jack
Be Thick. He also loves the six Universal Loves. Everything else tops out at +45.
What is the best cheap gift for Alex?
An egg. Any egg except a Void Egg is a liked gift worth +45, your coop makes them for free every morning, and
they never spoil. Gems from the Mines are the same +45 if you do not have animals yet.
When is Alex's birthday?
Summer 13. Gifts that day are worth 8x normal, so a loved gift is +640 and even a plain egg is +360. He is at
the beach in the morning and at the Ice Cream Stand from noon.
Why are Alex's loved gifts so hard to get?
Because none of them exist in Year 1. The Complete Breakfast recipe airs on Spring 21 of Year 2, Salmon Dinner
needs a Spring crop and a Fall fish in the same dish, and the book costs 20,000g from the Bookseller in Year 3.
Liked gifts are the intended path for Alex, not a fallback.
How do you get Salmon for Salmon Dinner?
Salmon is a Fall river fish, 6am to 7pm, in Pelican Town or Cindersap Forest. The waterfalls in southern
Cindersap Forest near Pam's trailer have it at any hour. Catch a stack in Fall and cook the dishes in one
batch, because cooked food keeps forever.
What gifts should you never give Alex?
Quartz and Holly, which he hates at -40. Also Salmonberry, Wild Horseradish and any book other than Jack Be
Nimble, Jack Be Thick, all of which are -20.
What is the only heart event choice that costs friendship?
At the 5-heart event in his bedroom, answering "Worthless? Yeah, that about sums it up" costs 50 friendship.
"We all have our strengths and weaknesses" gains 50 instead.
Can you marry Alex in Stardew Valley?
Yes, and he is available to both male and female farmers. Reach 8 hearts and give him a Bouquet to start
dating, then reach 10 hearts and give him a Mermaid's Pendant to propose.
