How to make a Grindstone in Minecraft

The Grindstone recipe

To craft a Grindstone, you need to gather some materials. The quick answer is to craft a Grindstone with 2 Sticks, 1 Stone Slab, and 2 Wooden Planks in a crafting table. Here are the details on how to get each item.

1. Gather resources

  • 2 Sticks
  • 1 Stone Slab
  • 2 Wooden Planks (any type)

Create Sticks

To make Sticks:

  1. Grab Wood from any tree
  2. Convert the Wood blocks into Wooden Planks in your inventory
  3. Place 2 Wooden Planks vertically in a crafting table to get 4 Sticks

Make a Stone Slab

To create a Stone Slab:

  1. Collect 3 Stone blocks (get these by smelting Cobblestone in a Furnace)
  2. Place the 3 Stone blocks in a horizontal row in a crafting table
  3. This way, you will get 6 Stone Slabs

Collect Wooden Planks

To make Wooden Planks:

  1. Gather Wood from any tree
  2. Place the Wood in any slot of a crafting table or in your inventory
  3. This way, you will get 4 Wooden Planks

Once you have collected all the materials, follow these steps to craft the Grindstone:

  1. Open a crafting table
  2. Place 1 Stick in the top-left corner
  3. Place 1 Stone Slab in the top-middle slot
  4. Place 1 Stick in the top-right corner
  5. Place 2 Wooden Planks in the middle row (left and right slots)

3. Using the Grindstone

The Grindstone has two main usages:

Repairing Items

You may want to repair items to not waste resources by crafting more. To repair items using the Grindstone:

  1. Place the Grindstone on the ground
  2. Right-click on the Grindstone to open its menu
  3. Place the damaged item in the top slot
  4. Place a second item of the same type in the bottom slot
  5. The repaired item will appear in the output slot

Remember: The repaired item will have the combined durability of both items plus 5% of the maximum durability. This is a very efficient way to repair items without wasting any resources.

Removing Enchantments

To remove enchantments from an item:

  1. Place the enchanted tool in any slot of the Grindstone
  2. The tool will appear in the output slot without any enchantments
  3. You will receive some experience points for removing the enchantments (not all the xp)

Can I repair any item with a Grindstone?

Basically, yes. You can repair most tools, weapons, and armor using a Grindstone. However, some items like Maces and other special items might need to use a different repair method.

Do I lose experience when using a Grindstone?

No ! You actually gain experience when remove enchantments with a Grindstone. The amount of experience you get depends on the level and number of enchantments removed.

Can I repair items with different materials?

You can't repair items with different materials. You can only repair items with the same type of item. For example, you can only repair a Diamond Sword with another Diamond Sword, not with an Iron Sword.

Is the Grindstone better than an Anvil?

The Grindstone and Anvil aren't made for the same purpose. The Grindstone is better for removing enchantments and simple repairs. The Anvil is better for combining enchantments and more complex repairs. We recommend to have both in your base.
