The Beacon recipe
To craft a Beacon, you need to gather multiple rare materials. The quick answer is to craft a Beacon with 1 Nether Star, 3 Obsidian, and 5 Glass blocks in a crafting table. Here are the details on how to get each component.
1. Gather resources
- 1 Nether Star
- 3 Obsidian
- 5 Glass blocks
Obtain a Nether Star
The Nether Star is the rarest resource for the Beacon recipe. To get it, you need to:
- Find a Fortress in the Nether
- Defeat 3 Wither Skeleton to drop their head (2.5% chance to drop)
- Collect 4 Soul Sand blocks in the Nether
- Create a Wither by placing the Soul Sand in a T-shape with the 3 Wither Skeleton heads on top of it
- Defeat the Wither boss to drop the Nether Star
Get Obsidian
Obsidian is created when water touches lava source blocks. You can find it:
- In the Nether (rarely)
- In the Overworld near lava pools, frequently in caves
- By creating it yourself using water and lava
Remember, Obsidian can only be mined with a Diamond or Netherite pickaxe.
Create Glass blocks
To make Glass blocks:
- Collect 5 Sand blocks
- Smelt the 5 Sand Blocks in a Furnace to make Glass
2. Craft the Beacon
Once you have collected all the materials, follow these steps to craft the Beacon:
- Open a crafting table
- Place 3 Glass blocks in the top row
- Place 1 Obsidian in the middle
- Place 1 Nether Star in the middle of the bottom row
- Place 1 Obsidian on each side of the Nether Star

3. Set up the Beacon
After crafting the Beacon, you need to set it up properly to activate its effects:
- Choose a place with a clear view of the sky (no blocks over the Beacon)
- Build a pyramid base using mineral blocks (Iron, Gold, Emerald, Diamond, or Netherite)
- Place the Beacon on top of the pyramid
- Right-click on the Beacon to open its menu
- Select the primary and secondary effects you want to activate
Pyramid sizes and effects
The size of your pyramid determines how many effects you can have active:
- 1 layer (3x3): One primary effect
- 2 layers (5x5): One primary effect and one secondary effect
- 3 layers (7x7): One primary effect and one secondary effect
- 4 layers (9x9): One primary effect and one secondary effect
The larger the pyramid is, the stronger the beacon's effect is and the wider is its range
Available effects
Primary effects (choose one):
- Speed I
- Haste I
- Resistance I
- Jump Boost I
- Strength I
Secondary effects (choose one):
- Regeneration I
- Or increase primary effect to level II
